Service and Learning Together

Teaching younger kids about their future is important. Most important is to teach them how to reach their goal in the most successful way. Teaching my 5th grader how to become a police officer, lawyer, and millionaire was an experience that made me feel better about myself, because I was able to help someone.

Shelden knew what he wanted to be, but didn't know much about what a police officer, kawyer, and millionaire does. My partner and I brought in information that was useful for him and he walked away confident. It took some work to get him focused but it worked.

He had a good time making his college that descibed him and things about the future job he wanted. We learned more about our student, like the things he likes and dislikes. We found out that he wants to help others the same way we were helping him.

Shelden enjoyed our colorful powerpoint that was easy to follow and understand. He was able to see pictures of what real millionaires and lawyers look like. We only came into one problem with Shelden.

He didn't like the idea of writing an essay. Shelden wasn't interested either. He wanted to go play with his friends instead of being with us, even with the bribe of a candybar. I think instead of the students writing a essay, they should do something else.

I enjoyed working with Shelden and would like to work with him more. I think he is extremly confident that a millionare, police officer, and lawyer does. He knows the individual jobs they do and how they help others too.

Who I Admire the Most

There are many people who have influenced my life. But there is only one, my cousin Jessica, who has had the greatest impact. She works hard to get what she has, she is by my side every step of the way to help me with a problem I am having, and she motivates me to be a better person and do better.

My cousin Jessica is very independent. She has her own house, car, job, cell phone, and many more accessories, and is under the age of 25. She works hard a work night and day to make sure she has her basic needs and then her wants. Jessica rarely asks anyone for anything to help her with anything she wants to be able to say she did it on her own.

Whenever I have a problem, no matter if it's boy, school, or family, she is a open ear to listen to me. It doesn't matter, it can be 4 in the morning, and she would swear she wasn't sleep just resting. Most of my problems she has already had. I know she'll give me the best advise to help me.

Jessica wants the best for me. She will push me to make sure I do my homework when I start to fall behind. When my report cards and progress reports come she is one of the 1st people who wants to see them. She is all about business and no slacking. She wants me to go to college and become something major. She doesn't want me to live the life the rest of our family lives. She knows there is so much potential in me, so she pushes me.

I love my cousin to death and I thank her for all she has done for me. I wish there is some kind of way I could repay her. But all the repaying she wants is for me to go to college, get a degree, and to be happy with my life and live up to the standards she knows I have.

Resident Life with Summer Scholars

My week in the dorms was exciting. Even though I was living with people I barely knew we got along very well. My room mates and I stayed up all time in the night on the laptop watching videos on youtube & much more, you would say we were bonding. We went to each others rooms, had talks, and got to know about each other more too.
The whole week living on the dorms, I probably only had 6 hours of sleep. I was so excited that I stayed up the whole night and had to be up early in the morning for cheer practice, then went to school afterwards. The food was excellent! I ate so much I was sure that I would gain the freshman 15 in 1 week.
The activities we did were fun like the movie night, battle of the scholars, ice cream social, and lastly the dance party/water fight we had. We went out with a bang makig our last day at the dorms something to remember.

My First Week as a College Student

My first week at UNO as a Summer Scholar has been the best experience of my life. I've meet alot of new people who share the same interests as me. Also being able to be taught by a real college professor is exciting. I'm curious for next week to come because I am ready to move into Scotts Residential Hall.
While being in the College 101 class I met a group of new students from different schools and who have also came from other countries. They have shared their experiences with us, their customs, values, and much more. All of the other students are nice and get along with each other inside and outside of class.
My professor H. Fountain is wonderful. She is interesting and has the prefect energy to teach a class. She has a sense of humor that keeps us awake in class because we're usually all tired when we come. Her work that she gives is straight-forward and is easy to complete if you're willing to do the work. She is willing to answer any questions that needs to be answered and give extra help to anything that was not understood. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
I am very excited to stay on campus. It will be a new learning experience for me. I've always been nervous about staying away from home because of going to school, but this will give me the opportunity to see what it is really like. I'm nervous about the whole eating situation, everything is free!. I've heard of the freshman 15 and I'm not trying to gain it in one week.
I'm thankful that I was selected as a Summer Scholar because this is giving me alot of new challenges and it is making me push myself to do homework every night and prepare for what college is really like. I would tell anyone who is elgible to apply to apply because they would really enjoy their time there.
